May 26th, 2007 by dd

La dee da, here we go again. Getting to be ‘old hat’ this opening a festival thingee…
First Wong Kar-Wai came to a little town called Cannes and opened up a quaint little film festival there with his first foray into English speaking cinema called My Blueberry Nights. An art house film with a commercially viable Hollywood cast.

Now word has trickled out that Academy Award winning director Ang Lee’s new movie Lust Caution will be the opening movie of the 64th Venice Film Festival according to festival director Marco Muller. The cast includes Hong Kong veteran actor Tony Leung (Liang Chaowei), Taiwan pop singer Leehom Wong (Wang Lihong), and Chinese mainland newcomer Tang Wei, all of whom are expected to go to Venice at the end of August.

The movie is now in post-production in New York. Ain’t it grand that Asia is gaining the much needed attention it deserves. Film festival openings in Asia, Europe and in due time, the United States of the Americas!

BREAKING: Wong Kar Wai’s My Blueberry Nights to Open Cannes Film Festival

April 19th, 2007 by dd

The Festival de Cannes will be ringing in its 60th birthday by opening with Wong Kar Wai’s “My Blueberry Nights” finally putting to bed speculation that the director’s first English-language title wouldn’t be finished in time for a Cannes slot. The film stars Norah Jones in her acting debut.

This year’s lineup is a heady mix of fest vets and fresh faces after last year’s lineup introduced a lot of newcomers. Of the 21 films In Competition, 13 are from directors who have never before vied for the Palme d’Or.

Asian films are a noticeable minority In Competition this year, with only Lee Chang-dong’s “Secret Sunshine” and Naomi Kawase’s “Mogari no Mori” making the cut.

The Festival de Cannes runs May 16-27.

Congratulations, Wong Kar Wai! Check out which other Asian films made the cut at Cannes after the jump!

Tony Leung Considers Ang Lee Most Demanding Director

March 22nd, 2007 by dd

tonyleung 1 2
Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung Chiu-wai has worked with some of the top directors in ethnic Chinese cinema, and he says Taiwan’s Ang Lee is the toughest.

Leung worked with mainland Chinese director Zhang Yimou on “Hero,” fellow Hong Konger Wong Kar-wai on several movies, and just finished shooting Lee’s spy thriller “Lust, Caution.”

Asked to compare the three directors, Leung said, “director Ang Lee’s demands are the strictest.”

“He has high expectations for himself, so he has very high demands for actors. He hopes you can deliver 200 percent. It’s tougher for the actors when they shoot and prepare for their roles. Ang Lee asks you to do things that are impossible,” Leung said. “But when you accomplish something that resembles what he asked for, you feel that it’s a very big achievement.” [IHT]

Hong Kong directors Kar Wai Wong and Stanley Kwan will join hands in filming a lesbian story. The film will start shooting in Taiwan in April.

The high-profile movie features subtle feelings between two senior high school students, with one of them, simultaenously falling in love with a young man.

Hong Kong star Viter Fan will star as the young man in the romantic comedy, while the featured actress will be necomer, Ke Jiayan, replacing Rainie Yang. It is said that Kar Wai Wong refused Rainie Yang because of her nude scenes in the 2006 movie Spider Lilies which also featured a lesbian storyline.

Kar Wai Wong’s company has recruited Yanni Wang, a winner of the 2006 Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival to direct the film. Stanley Kwan will be executive producer. (Source: CriEnglish)

Iconoclastic HK Director Wong Kar-wai Article in the NY Times

November 19th, 2006 by dd

Norah Jones Jude Law

The Master of Time: Wong Kar-wai in America

ON a SoHo film set last August, Jude Law and Norah Jones were getting intimate. Repeatedly intimate. To be precise, they had kissed upwards of 150 times in the past three days.

The occasion for this outbreak of passion was “My Blueberry Nights,” the first English-language film by Wong Kar-wai, the maverick Hong Kong director turned avatar of cosmopolitan cool. This particular night was stifling as the crew spilled out of Palacinka, a small cafe on Grand Street that was the principal New York location, preparing for yet another take of the scene known as “the Kiss.”

It’s closing time, and Ms. Jones, the only remaining customer, is slumped on the counter, her eyes shut. A smudge of cream rests on her upper lip, the telltale sign of a dessert binge. Mr. Law, cleaning up behind the bar, gazes at her, slowly leans in and steals a lingering kiss. When he surfaces, the cream on her lip is gone…

The Weinsteins Go Berry Picking…

November 11th, 2006 by dd

wong kar wai

The Weinstein Co. has bought all U.S. rights to Wong Kar Wai’sMy Blueberry Nights,” a road movie set in the U.S. and starring American actors.

Movie centers on a woman, played by singer Norah Jones, who travels across the country searching for answers about love and finding comedic adventures along the way. Ensemble cast also includes Jude Law, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman.

Acclaimed Hong Kong director earlier helmed “Happy Together” — which earned him the director prize at Cannes – “In the Mood for Love” and “Chungking Express,” which the Weinsteins’ Miramax distributed and which won a number of Hong Kong Film Awards. Last year he released fantasy pic “2046,” which received critical praise but had trouble finding an audience. [Variety]
