BREAKING: Wong Kar Wai’s My Blueberry Nights to Open Cannes Film Festival

April 19th, 2007 by dd

blueberry

The Festival de Cannes will be ringing in its 60th birthday by opening with Wong Kar Wai’s “My Blueberry Nights” finally putting to bed speculation that the director’s first English-language title wouldn’t be finished in time for a Cannes slot. The film stars Norah Jones in her acting debut.

This year’s lineup is a heady mix of fest vets and fresh faces after last year’s lineup introduced a lot of newcomers. Of the 21 films In Competition, 13 are from directors who have never before vied for the Palme d’Or.

Asian films are a noticeable minority In Competition this year, with only Lee Chang-dong’s “Secret Sunshine” and Naomi Kawase’s “Mogari no Mori” making the cut.

The Festival de Cannes runs May 16-27.

Congratulations, Wong Kar Wai! Check out which other Asian films made the cut at Cannes after the jump!

Nude Photos for Charity Do Not Sit Well with Thai Government

April 3rd, 2007 by dd

daily news
For a good cause… but can maybe raise more $ by substituting
the one on the right? Just sayin’!

Celebrities and models in Thailand recently stripped for a magazine, but it’s actually nudity for a cause. They did it to raise money for a Buddhist temple which helps treat HIV/AIDS patients. The 30 photos is being published in the charity edition of entertainment magazine Fame this month, but not everyone’s happy about it. The country’s Ministry of Culture is livid that the celebrities had to get their kit off for a cause instead of raising money in a decent, fully-clothed manner.

Culture Minister Khaisri Sri-aroon on Friday called the project inappropriate, and urged the celebrities to use their fame in less provocative merit-making efforts.

‘Why didn’t the celebrities have their photos taken with their clothes on or dress in traditional Thai clothes instead,’ commented Prisana Pongtadsirikul, secretary-general of the National Culture Commission.

Thanks to the controversy sparked by the project, the AIDS hospice that was supposed to benefit from the donations opted to turn down the money. I’m sure a lot of people think that it’s not necessary to litter a campaign with naked stars, although it does help get a lot of attention and interest, but it seems a lot like the outraged groups are just being blind to a good cause. BLASIAN Contagion: Catch the Fever!

March 26th, 2007 by dd

cassie 1

In an effort to be all things to all people (DD should run for political office), DailyDumpling wanted to do a posting on Blasians or Afro-Asians, those who are of mixed Black and Asian ancestry. Since this is meant to be an entertainment destination, DD won’t get into the social ramifications of the Blasian Hapa identity in America or abroad and how the dynamic is different from other types of Hapas. Nope, no way, staying far away from that fun discussion.

Instead, the Dumpling is going a different direction and pondering the age old debate of these two ancient proverbs:

“Once you’ve had black, you’ll never go back” and
“Once you’ve had Asian, it’s the only persuasion”

Well, now you the term for when you combine the two! Alright, now a test. See if you can name the stars below who are Blasian and of what ethnic Asian persuasion they’re from. Those who answer everything correctly win nothing except the gratification of knowing that you have less of a life than DD.

Answers to who’s who and of what persuasion after the jump!

South Korean horror film “The Host” picked up four awards, including best picture, at Hong Kong’s inaugural Asian film awards on Tuesday night in a glitzy ceremony aimed at recognizing the region’s nascent film talent.

Stars from across Asia, including Iran, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and China arrived by limo to tread the red carpet in tuxedos and dazzling gowns for a ceremony, partly inspired by Hollywood, at Hong Kong’s harbour-side convention centre.

French director Luc Besson, actress Michelle Yeoh, Hong Kong stars Tony Leung and Andy Lau, South Korean star Rain and director Park Chan-wook were among those who attended.

The Host”, a dark, thriller-cum-horror movie about a mutant squid-like monster and suffused with an undercurrent of anti-Americanism picked up awards for best picture, best actor, best cinematographer and best visual effects.

“(The film is) not only about anti-Americanism but about problems in Korea, for example asking for help from the police who don’t return any help,” said executive producer Choi Yong-bae, who received the white marble and twisted metal statuette for best film.

The film’s Song Kang-ho picked up the best actor prize.

Check to see who the other winners were at tonight’s AFA Awards show after the jump!
