Politics underscored the prizes as “Rang de Basanti” Saturday took top honors at the Int’l Indian Film Academy awards, Bollywood’s equivalent of the Oscars, at a ceremony held in Sheffield, England.

Event was held in from of a 12,000-plus audience at the Hallam Arena and according to some estimates show attracts half a billion TV spectators in 110 territories.

Six hour ceremony which overspilled into the small hours of Sunday morning, was a superstar-studded event. In attendance were Bollywood’s first family — Amitabh Bachchan, son Abhishek Bachchan and bride Aishwarya Rai — Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan and the inevitable Shilpa Shetty.

Shamita is an aspiring actress but has not been able to garner the same sort of attention as Big Sis Shilpa…. til now? Intentional, accidental, this will certainly have more people paying attention to Shamita.

Bollywood Stars Stand Up for Animal Rights

Actor Rahul Khanna is the latest Bollywood star to work with PETA India and in his ad campaign, he’s protesting the condition of elephants in captivity.

An elephant requires almost 200 kgs of food – and more than 150 litres of water – every day, yet many people who own elephants openly admit that they cannot afford to feed the animals this much food. Elephants’ feet are not equipped to walk on tarred roads, yet elephants living in captivity are often forced to spend the entire day – and much of the night – walking on tarred roads. Elephants in cities cause traffic obstructions and pose a threat to the general public. Mahouts* use elephants for begging and have even used elephants to intimidate people in order to get money from them.

*Mahout - person who drives an elephant

Other stars who have signed up to work with PETA include Aishwarya Rai, who’s helping raise awareness about protecting black rhinoceros, and Shilpa Shetty, who is discouraging people from attending circuses. Richard Gere Burned in Effigy After Kissing Indian Actress Shilpa Shetty

Photographs of Richard Gere embracing Shilpa Shetty and kissing her on the cheek at an HIV/AIDS awareness event in New Delhi were splashed across Monday’s front pages in India — a country where sex and public displays of affection are largely taboo.

In Mumbai, members of the right-wing Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena beat burning effigies of Gere with sticks and set fire to glamorous shots of Shetty.

The two appeared at a press conference in New Delhi on Sunday to highlight the HIV/AIDS epidemic among India’s truck drivers. In front of a cheering crowd, Gere kissed the giggling Shetty on the hand, then kissed her on both cheeks before bending her in a full embrace to kiss her cheek again.

“This is a bit too much,” Shetty said after the embrace. “I understand this is his culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such manner.” [Y!]

Shilpa Shetty Meets the Queen

In a crowning moment of her stay in the UK, where she endeared herself to public after suffering racial abuses on a TV show, cinestar Shilpa Shetty met the Queen and both of them spoke on the importance of tolerance.

Queen Elizabeth II held out a black-gloved hand to Shilpa who performed a deep curtsy, standing in a line at a Commonwealth Day event at the Westminster Abbey last evening where the actress touched on issues such as racism and AIDS.

Shilpa almost tripped in her high, open-toed sandals when the Queen’s husband Prince Philip told her, “Look, be careful with your heels.”

Sultry Mallika Sherawat Goes from Bollywood to Hollywood

Sultry Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat will play the role of a Muslim woman in her second Hollywood film Unveiled to be directed by Bill Bannerman.

Sherawat made her Bollywood debut in 2002 and had a small role in the 2005 Hollywood film The Myth starring Jackie Chan where she played an Indian princess. She has also acted in around 10 Bollywood films.

Unveiled revolves around the life of a Muslim woman who has two husbands and a lover. It will be a blend of film noir, thriller and dark drama.

Hurley and Nayar’s Big, Fat Indian Wedding Fiasco

Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar’s Indian wedding celebrations were marred on March 9th, when a fight broke out between reporters and security guards.

The scuffle kicked off when journalists tried to prevent the couple’s car entering the Mekrangarh fort venue in Jodhpur following their nearby marriage ceremony.

Reporters then allegedly ran past security and followed Hurley and Nayar’s vehicle into the compound, before forcibly being removed. During the fracas, onlookers claim a security guard slapped a female journalist while another female reporter is said to have slapped one of the guards.

Bollywood Beauty Shilpa Shetty Gets Bullied by Racist ‘Big Brother’

“Why does everyone hate me?”

With those words, Shilpa Shetty, 31, a Bollywood movie star from India whose treatment by British contestants in the reality show, Big Brother, has provoked more than 16,000 viewers to complain to regulators that she is the victim of racist bullying.

The program coops up contestants in “Big Brother House,” where they are on camera 24 hours a day. The person who survives a series of evictions from the house is the winner.

Viewers believe the Bollywood actress is being targeted by housemates Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O’Meara because she is Indian.

The three have been caught on camera criticizing Ms. Shetty’s cooking and her personal mannerisms. “She wants to be white,” Ms. Lloyd was heard remarking to Ms. Goody. In another episode, Ms. Goody’s mother, Jackiey, asked Ms. Shetty if she lived in a house or a shack and repeatedly referred to Shilpa as “the Indian” instead of by her given name.

Over the weekend, former beauty queen Danielle Lloyd and ex-S Club 7 star Jo O’Meara poked fun at Shilpa’s accent.

Through it all, Shilpa has put on a brave face, insisting: “This will make me into a stronger person.”

Despite the controversy, the protests, and the debate, the show may very well catapult a popular local actress into one of the most recognizable Indian exports, perhaps even usurping Aishwarya Rai.
