Rainie Yang’s Mea Culpa Redux

April 5th, 2007 by dd

Part genuine; part public relations ploy. That’s how DaDump sees the latest press conference held by 23-year old Taiwan entertainer Rainie Yang as she once again offered a public apology for the words that triggered disgust among her mainland fans four years ago.

You see, back in 2003, Rainie was on a Taiwan show called Guess. When asked how long China’s war of resistance lasted against Japanese aggression in 1937, co-host Jacky Wu Zongxian told her. Her famous last words… “Just eight years?”

You can imagine this didn’t sit well with her Chinese fans who, in the wake of her naïve response petitioned to boycott her. Corporate sponsors including McDonald’s immediately pulled her commercials.

Cut to Tuesday. During her second apology (the next one is expected during the release of her next next album), Rainie Yang admitted her poor knowledge of history, explaining she had quit school at an early age.

So, yeah, it’s a publicity stunt to help her promote her upcoming third album and lots aren’t buying it but come on. Rainie didn’t give the most informed answer as a then 19-year old and she should know better but if a US Vice-President can’t spell ‘potatoes’, shouldn’t we cut her a little slack?

Girls Gone Wild: Rainie Yang and Isabella Leong Play Tonsil Hockey On-Screen

You know you love to watch. And apparently the Taiwanese love to provide. Spiderlilies is a Taiwan film starring Rainie Yang and Isabella Leong. DD could make more of an effort to find out what the film is about but apparently they just kiss a lot which is what’s really important. Ang Lee, Academy Award winning director of Brokeback Mountain who knows a thing or two about same sex smooches, is also from the tiny ‘renegade state’.

But I digress. What’s important here is that you focus on the images at hand. To that end, may I recommend another great film, Saving Face, about a lesbian daughter and her pregnant mother, played by Joan Chen. Shout out to Lynn Chen, the love interest, who went to the Dumpling’s alma mater… wonder if DD ever drunk dialled her.

Hong Kong directors Kar Wai Wong and Stanley Kwan will join hands in filming a lesbian story. The film will start shooting in Taiwan in April.

The high-profile movie features subtle feelings between two senior high school students, with one of them, simultaenously falling in love with a young man.

Hong Kong star Viter Fan will star as the young man in the romantic comedy, while the featured actress will be necomer, Ke Jiayan, replacing Rainie Yang. It is said that Kar Wai Wong refused Rainie Yang because of her nude scenes in the 2006 movie Spider Lilies which also featured a lesbian storyline.

Kar Wai Wong’s company has recruited Yanni Wang, a winner of the 2006 Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival to direct the film. Stanley Kwan will be executive producer. (Source: CriEnglish)
