DD isn’t embarrassed to admit that he watches American Idol. It’s actually quite a compelling show. And even though the show gives no love towards Asians by having its most famous contestant, William “She Bang” Hung, become its laughing stock mascot and having Paul Kim as the first person, let alone Asian, voted off this season, DD still thinks its the most wholesome program on TV today.
That said, what the heck is up with this Sanjaya Malakar character?! He can’t sing worth s%#$.
He was included in the bottom three but apparently he wasn’t considered a worse vocalist than Brandon Rogers.
Sanjaya somehow garnered enough votes (again) to live another day despite an awful rendition of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” on Tuesday night.
Is it the ‘fro? Is it the androgynous, not yet past puberty facial features? Seriously, DD has no idea. Can someone please fill the Dumpling in on why this guy is still on? Pity fu vote? Sanjaya seems like a sensitive, nice guy but this is a singing contest, right….?

The New York Times recently featured an article focusing on a number of Asian American recording artists. Why the dearth of Asians on the American pop charts? What is keeping these sensASIANal singers down!…
There are Asian-American stars in sports, movies, television and classical music. But the “Asian thing” is what many other aspiring Asian-American singers say largely accounts for the lack of Asian-American pop stars. People in the music industry, including some executives, have no ready explanation, but Asian-American artists and scholars argue that the racial stereotypes that hobble them as a group — the image of the studious geek, the perception that someone who looks Asian must be a foreigner — clash with the coolness and born-in-the-U.S.A. authenticity required for American pop stardom.
Come on now… William Hung can NOT be the most popular Asian American singer out there! Represent y’all!

Sorry, Folks. It doesn’t look like there will be a repeat of reality TV’s Survivor of a Korean American winner. Paul Kim, a contestant on American Idol, is no Yul Kwon. In fact, he was the first to be voted off.
Even though he was the first to be let go of the top 24 contestants, Paula and Randy had some encouragement for the fallen star. Randy said he had to pick a song that would let him excel. And Paula added that he has “it” already: the studio and radio voice, plus the great range - Kim just over sang and picked the wrong song.
Based on the performances of the females, the men don’t seem to stand a chance and Paul certainly didn’t shine during his song performance. So although it wasn’t a great surprise, did the Asian dude have to be the first to go?! Isn’t that like how black people are always the first ones to die in horror films? A bit cliche if you ask me.
To add some sympathy to the matter, Kim said on the show, “This means the world to me. I’m banking on this. This is my last chance at music.” Famous last words… [TheMercuryNews]
