Christina Aguilera: Dirrty Girl Got Seoul

June 26th, 2007 by dd

christina

Dirrty Girl, Christina Aguilera, shook the Seoul Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium on Saturday in the South Korean capital.

The four-time Grammy-Award winner was supported by local K-pop singer Ivy.

Prior to the concert was a controversy surrounding a last-minute ticket clearance sale. Organizers of the performance initially sold A-class seats at US$95. However, beginning on June 13, an Internet shopping site began to sell pairs of A-class seats at 40-percent discounted price for both.

It is almost unprecedented in Korea to sell concert tickets of foreign popular stars at such sharply discounted prices. As a consequence, performance-goers who purchased tickets earlier became angry; some canceling their ticket purchases and buying tickets again at the discounted prices after getting a refund.

A lack of interest in the concert is not being named as the culprit; rather, it appears inflated ticket prices are to blame.

Really? Seriously? To Each Her Own…

June 1st, 2007 by dd

Sandra Oh is a terrific actress and she’s knocking down barriers for women and Asian Americans, heck, all people of color in the entertainment industry. So DaDump has much respect for her abilities and achievements and I’m a huge fan to boot so don’t get me wrong when I question the following people’s glasses prescriptions…

It’s natural in an unnatural way to want Angelina Jolie’s lips, Jessica Alba’s breasts, Maggie Cheung’s grace, maybe even Bai Ling’s modesty… so it’s no great surprise to see the influence of celebrities on today’s cosmetic surgery practices.

So it was with some dazed confusion to read that medical professionals have revealed the following:

Ellen DeGeneres, 49, and Sandra Oh, 35. “They’re the new ‘it’ girls,” said plastic surgeon Thomas Romo of New York City. “People come in with a magazine photo and say, ‘I want to look like that.’ “

A Humble Actress? Jeon Do-yeon Confounds DaDump

June 1st, 2007 by dd

South Korea’s Jeon Do-yeon won best actress award at the Cannes film festival last week and she’s as modest now as she was before. She has flown under the international radar during her ten year career of local Korean hits and isn’t actively seeking her ticket to global super-stardom. An actress who is devoted to her art and is genuinely humbled by world-wide attention and accolades. Who woulda thunk it?…
Jeon, 34, acclaimed at home for roles ranging from a prostitute with AIDS to a common girl caught in scandalous love affairs in a historic Korean court, took home the award for her role as a newly widowed mother in “Secret Sunshine.”

“I don’t think I’m a world star,” Jeon told a news conference in Seoul after arriving home from France. “I am not going to think that I’m one either.”

Lest We Forget, Michelle Wie Is a High School Graduate!

May 30th, 2007 by dd

mw

The Punahou High School Class of 2007 will hold its graduation this weekend and as much as Michelle Wie would like to be there, she’s got alternate plans.

Instead of walking across the stage and receiving her diploma with her friends back home in Hawaii, the most recognizable female golfer in the world will be a continent away in South Carolina playing her first professional tournament in six months.

In a way, her participation in the Ginn Tribute, hosted by Annika Sorenstam, will be just as much a rite of passage as the commencement ceremony she’ll be skipping.

There just won’t be any caps and gowns. And instead of a band playing “Pomp and Circumstance,” there will be marshals holding up signs asking those in attendance to stand still and be quiet.

Jackie Chan Teams Up with George Foreman To Sell Grilling Machine in Asia

May 30th, 2007 by dd

Hoping to spread the magic of heavyweight champ George Foreman and his Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine to Asia, Foreman and Jackie Chan just finished shooting an East-meets-West infomercial in Hong Kong.

“The Asian market doesn’t know George well, but they know hamburgers and they know Jackie,” says Foreman’s business partner, who came up with the pairing of the grill and the boxing champ in 1994.

The only market the grill has not penetrated is Asia. Chan was looking for endorsement opportunities, and after months ironing out conflicting schedules, the filming of the infomercial came together.

The launch of the ad campaign in China is planned for August, with Japanese and Korean versions to follow.

Jeon Do Yeon Takes Best Actress Award in Cannes

May 29th, 2007 by dd

South Korean actress Jeon Do-yeon, who stars in a tragic movie on death and faith, “Secret Sunshine”, won the Cannes filmfest’s best actress award Sunday.

The 34-year-old actress was acclaimed for her brave performance as a grieving wife and mother in the South Korean melodrama, the first picture in four years by Lee Chang-dong, a former South Korean culture minister.

“I can’t believe I’m here,” said Jeon, wearing a silver lame evening gown.

“There are many fabulous actresses here at the festival and I would like to represent them all here tonight. It is a great honour for me to have this prize.”

She has appears in nearly every scene of Lee’s two-and-a-half-hour-long film, portraying Shin-ae, a piano teacher who moves with her son to the hometown of her late husband, whose death is still the source of nearly unbearable pain.

She dotes on her young son as a link to his father and the two have a palpably close relationship. When, in a cruel and unexpected twist in the story, the small boy is abducted and killed, Shin-ae turns to evangelical Christianity on the advice of her pharmacist, a devout believer, as a means of dealing with her grief.

Filled with religious fervour, she decides to visit her son’s murderer in prison to tell him she has forgiven him. But she is horrified when the killer tells her with a serene smile that he has repented and God has already offered him absolution.

“Who is God to forgive him before I have?” she asks her Christian friends in a rage.
