Canadian actress Olivia Cheng is set to play the lead role in a feature film about American writer Iris Chang in The Iris Chang Story: The Woman who Couldn’t Forget.

The movie started production in China in December and is set for an end of the year release. It marks the 70th anniversary of the eight-week rape and slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people in the ancient capital of Nanjing as Japan battled to conquer China.

Chang documented the horror in her acclaimed bestselling book, The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II, in 1997.

Not the lightest of subjects but prior to this role, Olivia was a journalist. DD has taken it upon himself to inject some comic relief so that this news/ issue doesn’t ruin your weekend. CLICK HERE to see her get the shock of her life in a demonstration of utter commitment or stupidity!

Clint Eastwood is being courted to star in the planned $40m adaptation of Iris Chang’s novel ‘The Rape Of Nanking‘.

The veteran Hollywood star is one of several stars already offered roles in the film, with actresses Meryl Streep, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi all in the running.

The film will apparently be directed by Simon West and follows the story of the titular massacre carried out in China by Japanese troops leading up to World War Two in 1938.

During the occupation of Nanking, the Japanese army allegedly raped, looted and committed numerous similar atrocities, including the execution of political prisoners and wrongfully accused innocent civilians.

According to Moviehole.net, the film’s central characters will be a group of foreign nationals who help to protect thousands of civilians during the massacre.

The script for the film, which is due to shoot next Spring, has been penned by William J. MacDonald. [Virgin.net]
