Actress Cameron Diaz appears to have committed a major fashion faux pas in Peru. She may have inadvertently offended Peruvians who suffered decades of violence from a Maoist guerrilla insurgency by touring there Friday with a bag emblazoned with one of Mao Zedong’s favorite political slogans.
While explored the Inca city of Machu Picchu high in Peru’s Andes, Diaz wore over her shoulder an olive green messenger bag emblazoned with a red star and the words “Serve the People” printed in Chinese on the flap, perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao’s most famous political slogan.
Nearly 70,000 people were killed during the insurgency.
“It alludes to a concept that did so much damage to Peru, that brought about so many victims,” said Pablo Rojas about the bag’s slogan. “I don’t think she should have used that bag where the followers of that ideology” did so much damage. [Y!]

South Korea’s Jeon Do-yeon won best actress award at the Cannes film festival last week and she’s as modest now as she was before. She has flown under the international radar during her ten year career of local Korean hits and isn’t actively seeking her ticket to global super-stardom. An actress who is devoted to her art and is genuinely humbled by world-wide attention and accolades. Who woulda thunk it?…
Jeon, 34, acclaimed at home for roles ranging from a prostitute with AIDS to a common girl caught in scandalous love affairs in a historic Korean court, took home the award for her role as a newly widowed mother in “Secret Sunshine.”
“I don’t think I’m a world star,” Jeon told a news conference in Seoul after arriving home from France. “I am not going to think that I’m one either.”

Move over Hollywood. The star-studded, red-carpet premiere was once the almost exclusive property of Tinseltown. But now Tokyo is grabbing the limelight.
The fifth Harry Potter film, “The Order of the Phoenix,” will be out in Japan ahead of other markets, with Warner Bros. officials confirming that Daniel Radcliffe and other key castmembers will fly in to Tokyo when it makes its debut here June 28 — ahead of the glitzy July 3 event scheduled for London.
“Spider-Man 3″ got the trend off the ground with a spectacular launch in Tokyo on April 16, while the third installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise — “At World’s End” — made its Asian splash here May 23.
“Japan has always been the biggest territory outside North America, and the final boxoffice figures in Japan have sometimes outgrossed the U.S. take,” said Noriyuki Sano, head of the publicity division at Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan.
