Ayumi Plays the Diva Card as Her Entourage Strong Arms Hong Kong Locals

April 12th, 2007 by dd

Japanese pop queen Ayumi Hamasaki upset locals in a Hong Kong fishing village when she made a surprise visit for a seafood meal with 22 aggressive bodyguards and flunkies, witnesses said.

Hamasaki was cocooned by her entourage who prevented locals from getting near her table or fans from taking photographs on Lamma Island, about two miles from downtown Hong Kong after she had completed a series of sold-out concerts.

“The most famous J-pop star of all time was having a post concert bite accompanied by no less than 12 bodyguards and another 10 strong entourage,” said one witness. “(I) didn’t have a phone to photo with and the table next to me was prevented from taking pictures anyway.”

A spokesman for the Rainbow Restaurant, where Hamasaki ate, confirmed the singer had dined at the eatery but wouldn’t comment on her entourage’s behavior.

An Ayumi Refresher Course For the Uninitiated

April 9th, 2007 by dd

The tickets to Ayumi Hamasaki’s Tour of Secret in Hong Kong this past weekend were sold out in three hours, so if you missed it, wait for the DVD. For those of you who don’t yet have Ayumi-fever and who need a refresher course on the J-Pop Super Star, here are a few facts about her:

  • She has sold over 50 million records worldwide already
  • She is the fourth top-selling Japanese artist in the history of Japan
  • She is the first female singer to have 27 No 1 singles on the chart
  • Her latest album, Secret, won the Japan Gold Disc Award for Rock/Pop Album of the Year
  • A collaboration with Hello Kitty was made for the tour
  • She is a fashion icon. She won three consecutive Nail Queen awards and five Best Jeanist awards. A pair of her jeans with her famous signature on the back pocket was auctioned for Yen76 million.

And the worst is, having achieved all that, she is only 29.

Check out some fun pics of Ayumi at the Hong Kong carnival as she unwinds before her Saturday concert after the jump!

K-Pop, J-Pop, MandoPop Do Battle in Taiwan

March 12th, 2007 by dd

Make some room for Rain

That little ‘renegade province’ otherwise known as Formosa, I mean Taiwan, sure is causing a lot of consternation and not just in the world of politics.

In the span of one week, three titans of Asian Pop (well, actually 2.5) will be working to win the hearts of the Taiwan concert-goers. Reigning King of K-Pop, Rain, continues his world tour with a stopover on March 31. This clashes directly with Angela Zhang whose concert, on her home turf no less, will be the same day.

Angela’s record company has sent her stylist to buy a heap of clothing, planning to use a myriad of styles to compete with Rain’s monster production show. When Angela Zhang heard that her idol Rain’s concert conflicted with hers, she helplessly said, “Then I will have no chance to see his performance, what a pity.”

Meanwhile, J-Pop sensation, Ayumi Hamasaki, will hold a concert one week earlier on the 24th. Tickets were sold out within 2 hours and organizers were trying to add another show to meet the high demand.

Japan Releases Pop Idol Dolls of MJ and Ayumi

March 10th, 2007 by dd

Actually just one was officially announced…

A doll of Japanese pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki holding Hello Kitty in her arm will go on sale during the sultry 28-year-old singer’s tour of Asia which starts 10 March.

“I’m really happy to collaborate with Kitty, which I’ve loved since childhood. Regardless of age or nationality, Hello Kitty is loved by many women and is very special,” said Hamasaki, arguably the best-known face in Japanese pop.

In other news, Michael Jackson did his best impression as a non-human blow up figure by attending several “fan appreciation events” in Tokyo where he was the guest of honor at a party where about 400 people paid $3,500 each for a buffet dinner. More than 100 orphans and handicapped children were invited for free.

Seriously, DD can’t tell if that’s a lifesize wax version of MJ. That suit totally throws us for a loop too.

J-Pop Queen Ayumi Hamasaki Plays the Diva Card

March 6th, 2007 by dd

I’m not that innocent…

Hong Kong fans may adore Ayumi Hamasaki, but not two of the country’s top hotels. According to Japan’s Flash magazine, the 29 year old J-pop queen was blacklisted for two incidents.

When she was in Hong Kong in 2002 to shoot a pictorial book, Ayumi apparently organised wild parties in her hotel suite. She even broke a glass panel inside the room and refused to pay - until her record label had to step in and apologise. In December during her visit for the premiere of the Takeshi Kaneshiro film Confession Of Pain, she stayed in another hotel and created more trouble with more wild parties.

Ayumi is also quite the spender. Not only does she travel with 10 bodyguards, but she once flew her five pet dogs with her to Korea for a job, together with their own entourage of 12 pet groomers. She also reportedly employs five personal masseurs to take charge of different parts of her aching body.

And Ayumi can turn nasty at times. While shooting in New York last year, she reportedly fell out with a hair stylist and insisted on this person leaving her entourage. As all flights were full, she herself forked out more than $127,000 to charter a plane to fly the stylist back to Japan. [Electric]

Kumi Koda Is Bringing Sexy Back

January 3rd, 2007 by dd

Koda Kumi Pose

It’s official: Kumi Koda is Japan’s biggest pop icon last year, selling more albums than reigning J-pop queen Ayumi Hamasaki.

Kumi, who prides herself on being a modern-day sex goddess, has reportedly amassed an amazing $163.8 million in sales from releasing 12 singles, a greatest hits album and a DVD last year.

Last week, she received a trophy from Oricon (Japan’s Billboard) for her ero-kakkoii (Japanese for erotic cool) power.

The timing could not be better.

In a stagnating J-pop scene dominated by familiar names who keep churning out familiar tunes, flamboyant Kumi, 25, has been a breath of fresh air.

Instead of taking a back seat while watching the Korean Wave soar, it seems Japan has finally decided to rejoin the race for the Asian dollar. [Electric]
