Lest We Forget, Michelle Wie Is a High School Graduate!
May 30th, 2007 by ddThe Punahou High School Class of 2007 will hold its graduation this weekend and as much as Michelle Wie would like to be there, she’s got alternate plans.
Instead of walking across the stage and receiving her diploma with her friends back home in Hawaii, the most recognizable female golfer in the world will be a continent away in South Carolina playing her first professional tournament in six months.
In a way, her participation in the Ginn Tribute, hosted by Annika Sorenstam, will be just as much a rite of passage as the commencement ceremony she’ll be skipping.
There just won’t be any caps and gowns. And instead of a band playing “Pomp and Circumstance,” there will be marshals holding up signs asking those in attendance to stand still and be quiet.
She attended her senior prom, even though she went stag and the food was cold, and got the chance to go to the movies and hang out at the beach with her friends.
But while she was busy having the time of her life, teen rival Morgan Pressel and other members of her up-and-coming peer group were busy doing something Wie — for all her hype and potential — has never been able to accomplish – WIN.
“I definitely feel like I have the drive in me,” she said Tuesday. “I feel like now I’m getting more mature about it. You know, I’m just going to give it my 110 percent and see where it gets me.” [FayObserver]

Michelle has been accepted to Stanford University, Tiger’s alma mater, and intends to go this September in lieu of turning pro. We’ll see what happens this summer but the easy money is that she’ll be in Palo Alto this Fall.
