Gong Li Gets Verbal Smack Down For a Fashion Faux Pas
April 3rd, 2007 by ddFor those of you too young to remember, The Gong Show was a game show where contestants had a short time to impress the judges with their talents or lack thereof. If any one of the judges considered an act to be particularly bad, he or she could strike a large gong, thus forcing the performer to stop.
So why are critics of the Chinese actress clamoring to give the gong to Gong? It has nothing to do with her recent film outing in Hannibal. It does have everything to do with her choice of attire.
Find out more after the jump! (Hint: it’s soft and furry)

Time is up for Gong on a rare mis-step…
Chinese actress Gong Li has been heavily criticized for her choice of fashion while lobbying for environmental protection - because she was wearing fur. Li, a delegate to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, was proposing plans to clean up the environment when she was heckled by the state-run media for wearing fur over her shoulders.
And now politicians and citizens of China alike are calling for her removal from the national body.
Plaintiff Zhou Xin says, “I want to warn Gong Li that if you are going to be a spokesperson for a cause, then you have to take on the social responsibility.”
But the actress’ manager Zeng Jingchao claims critics are only attacking her because they are jealous of her success.
He says, “This is why people don’t want to become famous.” [Starpulse]
