Hooray for Bollywood
December 27th, 2006 by ddA new show featuring the music and dance of Bollywood has hit London.
The Merchants of Bollywood comes from producer Harvey Goldsmith - the brains behind the Live Aid and Live 8 events - and is on tour in the UK for the first time.
It opened last week and saw a cast of Indian dancers re-tell the story of the Merchant family, whose choreography has helped shape Hindi cinema over several decades.
In a series of high energy dance sequences the show picks out classic routines and scenes from Bollywood films across the ages, charting the progress from traditional dance to modern disco inspired extravaganzas.
It’s the latest celebration of Indian cinema to come to this country. Bollywood has become more and more popular in the UK, not just among Asian audiences, but also those whose film tastes hark back to the big Hollywood song and dance spectacles of the Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly eras.
