Somebody Please Buy Rosie a CLUE for Christmas!
December 15th, 2006 by ddI can’t decide which bothers me more: Rosie’s initial mocking impersonation of Chinese people or her clearly reluctant, very qualified apology on the matter. People.com recently reported the following:
After running a clip of the offending segment (on The View), which originally ran Dec. 5, Rosie said, “This apparently was very offensive to a lot of Asian people. So I asked Judy, who’s Asian and works here in our hair and makeup department. I said, ‘Was it offensive to you?’ And she said, ‘Well, kinda. When I was a kid people did tease me by saying ching-chong.’
“So apparently ‘ching-chong,’ unbeknownst to me, is a very offensive way to make fun, quote-unquote, or mock, Asian accents. Some people have told me it’s as bad as the n-word. I was like, really? I didn’t know that.”
O’Donnell said that her joke was “never intended to hurt anyone, and I’m sorry for those people who felt hurt or were teased on the playground,” but added that in the future, “there’s a good chance that I’ll do something like that again … Not on purpose.”
Last weekend, O’Donnell’s rep, Cindi Berger, said in a statement: “She’s a comedian in addition to being a talk show co-host. I certainly hope that one day they will be able to grasp her humor.”
Uhh, gee, thanks, Rosie. You know what, come to think of it, I guess Mel didn’t mean to offend the Jewish community. He was just drunk. And, hey, Michael Richards didn’t know the N-word would offend black people that much. In fact, he should enlist your rep so that she can issue a statement like: “Michael’s recent rant and prolific use of the N-word was done in the name of comedy. Helloooo?! I certainly hope that one day they (black people, of course) will be able to grasp his humor.” That’s like an apology. Who was he to know that would be offensive.
So on behalf of chinks Asians everywhere, we kinda like sorta accept your apology. Rosie. I mean it’s not like your ignorance or lack of awareness is your fault, especially since you’re a social activist who attacks anyone and everyone for the slightest perceived offense towards gay and lesbians. Really. So long as the offensive remarks fit your social agenda, Rosie, we’ll look the other way. Sound kosher? Good. Merry f’—in Christmas!
